Itinerary 1 - The Western Loop walk

Description: A circular walk on the original Jubilee Walkway through the heart of the City with connections to many of the Capital's main tourist attractions.
Length: Approximately 6 miles (9km)
Average time needed to complete: 4 hours
Highlights: Leicester Square, National Gallery, Trafalgar Square, St James's Park, Westminster Abbey, Houses of Parliament, Thames Path National Trail, Lambeth Palace, London Aquarium, London Eye, South bank Centre, Gabriel's Warf, Tate Modern, Millennium Bridge, St Paul's Cathedral, Fleet Street, Sir John Soames' Museum, Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, Transport Museum, Portrait Gallery.
The best bit: All of it!
Nearest Stations: Leicester Square station is at the start of the loop and there are connections to Charing Cross, Embankment, Westminster, Victoria, Waterloo, Southwark, Blackfriars, St Paul's, Holborn and Covent Garden.
Start and finish point: The panel in the gardens at Leicester Square.

Route Directions: From the panel in the centre of Leicester Square exit the park in the south west corner by the Odeon West End Cinema and follow the pedestrianised area south, down St Martin's Street, passing Westminster Library and the National Portrait Gallery. Continue straight ahead to the National Gallery.

At Trafalgar Square walk past the Canada House and cross Cockspur Street and turn left and then right to enter the Mall under Admiralty Arch. Cross the Mall at the Duke of York steps into St. James's Park.

Follow Horse Guards Road past the parade ground. Pass the back of Downing Street, where the Prime Minister lives, to the junction of Birdcage Walk. Turn left into Great George Street and enter Parliament Square, opposite the Houses of Parliament. Keep to the west side of the Square and cross Broad Sanctuary, outside the Queen Elizabeth Conference Centre to Westminster Abbey.

Turn left and follow Parliament Square around the South side, turning right along St Margaret's Street past St Margaret's Westminster, to the front of the Houses of Parliament.

Cross St Margaret's Street at the Old Palace Yard and turn left into Victoria Tower Gardens. Follow the River Thames upstream through the park to the children's play area at the foot of Lambeth Bridge. Cross Lambeth Bridge and turn left passing the Museum of garden History and Lambeth Palace.

Now on the South Bank of the Thames join the Thames Path National Trail and follow the Albert Embankment passing St Thomas's Hospital and under Westminster Bridge. Pass the former County Hall site and the London Aquarium and ahead stands the British Airways London Eye.

Continue along the Queen's Walk passing Jubilee Gardens and then under Hungerford Bridge to the South Bank Centre.


The Walk continues past Gabriel's Wharf, the OXO Tower and under Blackfriars Bridge passing Bankside Gallery before reaching the Tate Modern.

Cross the River on the Millennium Bridge and walk up St Peter's Hill pedestrianised area to St Paul's Cathedral. Turn left on Cannon Street and onto Ludgate Hill crossing Ludgate Circus into Fleet Street.

Turn left off Chancery Lane onto Carey Street then turn right on Serle Street crossing into Lincoln's Inn Fields. Exit the park opposite John Soane's Museum on the northern side and turn left along Remnant Street crossing Kingsway to the junction with Great Queen Street. Follow the walkway along Great Queen Street passing the Freemasons' Hall, turning left on Drury Lane, right on to Broad Court and left on Bow Street to the Royal Opera House.

Turn right into the market area along Russell Street by the London Transport Museum and keep to the right of the market along the piazza and onto King Street. Cross Bedford Street and continue along New Row turning left along Bedfordbury and first right down the alleyway known as Goodwins Court. Cross St Martin's Place and continue ahead on Cecil Street (slightly to the left) onto Charing Cross Road. Turn left at Charing Cross Road and cross to the right along Trying Street to the north of the National Portrait Gallery.
Cross into Leicester Square to complete the Jubilee Walkway.

Itinerary 2 - The Eastern Loop walk

Description: A circular walk in the Eastern part of London following the River on the South Bank, crossing Tower Bridge and passing through the City back to the River across the Millennium Bridge.
Length: Approximately 5 miles (8km)
Average time needed to complete: 3 ½ hours
Highlights: Tate Modern, Shakespeare's Globe Theatre, Southwark Cathedral, Hayes Galleria, HMS Belfast, City Hall, Tower Bridge, St Katherine's Docks, Tower of London, Monument, Mansion House, bank Of England, St Paul's Cathedral,
The best bit: Tower Bridge to the Tower of London (30 minutes) including St Katherine's Docks.
Nearest Stations: Blackfriars is on the opposite bank (North) of the Tate Modern at the start of the description for the Loop. There are connections to the stations as London Bridge, Tower Hill, Monument, Bank, Mansion House and St Paul's.
Start and finish point: The Tate Modern on the South bank of the River Thames.

Route Directions: Follow the riverbank passing Shakespeare's Globe Theatre.

Continue under Southwark Bridge along Clink Street to the replica of the Golden Hinde and Southwark Cathedral.

Turn left off Cathedral Street, keeping parallel to the River on Montague Close under London Bridge. Continue into Tooley Street. Look out for the signpost indicating a walkway to the loeft returning to the Riverfront. Pass Hays Galleria, the complex of shops and restaurants and come to HMS Belfast.

Continue along the south bank passing City Hall, the new Greater London Authorities Headquarters of Potters Field. There is a view of the Tower of London (and Traiter's Gate). Walk on towards Tower Bridge.

Cross Tower Bridge and drop down to the riverside turning right as soon as possible crossing St Katharine's Way beside the Tower Hotel. Walk in front of the hotel and into St Katharine's Docks and yacht haven

Turn left at the Trade Winds Pub, cross the Telford Bridge and turn right at the Nauticalia Shop following the boardwalk to the left into Tower Gardens. Follow the path through Tower Gardens to the Tower of London.

Take the London Wall exit at the Tower of London ticket office area and turn right up Tower Hill and left at Tower Hill Terrace into Byward Street. Cross this and follow Great Tower Street to East Cheap and Monument Station.

Cross East Cheap and Grace Church Street taking King William Street to the Mansion House and the Bank of England at Bank Station. Follow Queen Victoria Street passing Mansion House Station and crossing Garlick Hill. Turn left at the crossing to cross the Millennium Bridge to The Tate Modern.

Itinerary 3 - The City Loop

Description: A circular walk in the City of London that connects to the Barbican Centre and provides an insight into City life.
Length: Approximately 2 miles (3km)
Average time needed to complete: 1 hour
Highlights: Mansion House, Bank of England, Guildhall, Guildhall Art Gallery, The Barbican Centre, Museum of London and St Paul's Cathedral.
The best bit: Mansion House to Guildhall (10 minutes) including the Bank of England, Lord Mayor's office and the magnificent Guildhall and art gallery.
Nearest Stations: Bank station is at the start of the loop and there are connections to Moorgate, Barbican, Cannon Street and St Paul's.
Start and finish point: The panel, unveiled by Her Majesty The Queen, outside 1 Poultry by Bank Station.

Route Directions: Cross Queen Victoria Street and turn left along Poultry/Cheapside turning right along King Street, crossing Gresham Street and into Guildhall Yard. Guildhall is opposite and the Guildhall Art Gallery to the right.

Turn right passing the art gallery and left on Basinghall Street taking the walkway to the right called Mason's Avenue and then left on Coleman Street to London Wall. Cross London Wall onto Moor Fields turning left just before Moorgate Station, rising up to the Barbican Centre.

Cross Moor Lane on the high walk and turn right at Willoughby House in the Barbican and go left along Cromwell Highwalk and then right over Gilbert Bridge effectively circling the atrium. Turn right along Cripple Gate on Alban Highwalk turning right at London Wall, Monkwell House following Bastion Highwalk to the Museum of London.

Keep left at the Museum and drop back down to street level turning right along Aldersgate Street crossing Negate Street to St Paul's Cathedral.

Turn left at St Paul's Cathedral towards the City Information Centre on Cannon Street and turn left again onto St Peter's Hill pedestrianised area with a view over to the Tate Modern across the Millennium Bridge. At Queen Victoria Street cross and turn left before the bridge passing Mansion House Station back to Bank Station.

Itinerary 4 - The Camden LoopThe Camden Loop Map

Description: A circular walk in the London Borough of Camden that connects the City with the main line stations in the North and shows off the best of London life.
Length: Approximately 3 miles (5km)
Average time needed to complete: 2 hours
Highlights: British Library, University College London, Russell Square, British Museum, Sir John Soames Museum, Lincoln's Inn Fields.
The best bit: From Russell Square to Holborn (30 minutes) including the magnificent glass roofed circular library inside the British Museum and the sandwiches at Onion Café on Sicilian Row.
Nearest Stations: Chancery lane is the nearest tube to the start of the Loop and there are links to Russell Square, Kings Cross/St Pancreas, Euston and Holborn. The route provides a nice 30 minute walk for people arriving by mainline stations (Kings Cross and Euston and heading into the heart of London.
Start and finish point: The panel outside Kings College on Chancery lane

Route Directions: Continue along Chancery Lane crossing Holborn and heading north on Brownlow Street, crossing Sandland Street and into Bedford Row. At Theobold's Road cross straight over and continue along Great James's Street passing Rugby Street and turning left at Great Ormond Street and right on Lambs Conduit Street. Turn left on Guildford Street and right along Lansdowne Terrace passing through the Brunswick Centre to Marchmont Street. Turn right to the junction of Leigh Street at Cartwright Gardens turning left at Judd Street, right on to Cromer Street and left on Argyle Street to Kings Cross Station. Turn left on the Euston Road passing close to the British Library.

Turn left along Judd Street and right on Hastings Street parallel to the Euston Road. Follow into Cartwright Gardens, turn right into Burton Place, right at Burton Street, left on Woburn Walk, right on Upper Woburn Place and left onto the Euston Road. Turn right on Gordon Street passing the University to Gordon Square. Cross Byng Place and turn left at the south side of the Square and turn left again on Woburn Square walking through the School for Oriental Studies campus into Russell Square. Keep to the west of the Square turning right along Montague Place and left into the British Museum.

Walk through the Museum to join Great Russell Street turning right briefly before taking a left down Museum Street. Turn left at the junction with Bloomsbury Way and continue to Southampton Place on the left. Follow the pedestrian area through to Southampton Row and turn right to Holborn Station. Cross High Holborn and Kingsway turning left into Lincoln's Inn Fields and the Sir John Soames Museum. Take Serle Street off the Square and turn left again along Carey Street back to Kings College.

Itinerary 5 - The Jubilee Loop walk

Description: A circular walk in the heart of London linking The Monarchy with the Government.
Length: Approximately 2 miles (3km)
Average time needed to complete: 1 hour
Highlights: Trafalgar Square, Admiralty Arch, St James' Park, Clarence House, Green Park, Buckingham Palace, Westminster Abbey, Big Ben, Houses of Parliament, War Office Museum.
The best bit: Trafalgar Square along The Mall to Buckingham Palace (15 minutes)
Nearest Stations: Westminster, Charing Cross, Embankment, St James' and Victoria all within 10 minutes walk.
Start and finish point: The panel on the South side of Trafalgar Square with views down Whitehall, the Mall, Northumberland Avenue, Cockspur Street and The Strand.

Route Directions: Cross Cockspur Street and turn left and then right to enter the Mall under Admiralty Arch. Cross the Mall at the Duke of York steps into St. James's Park.

Follow the Mall up to The Queen Victoria Memorial and Buckingham Palace (The Queen's official London residence) passing a double-sided panel interpreting the spectacular views.

Look out for another panoramic panel, unveiled opposite the Palace to mark the Golden Wedding of The Queen and The Duke of Edinburgh, celebrated in November 1997 and walk around the Eastern edge of St James' Park and down Birdcage Walk passing the Guards Chapel and Wellington Barracks.

Cross Horse Guards Road and continue along into Parliament Square to see Westminster Abbey, Big Ben and The Houses of Parliament.

Return along Birdcage Walk this time turning right along Horse Guards Road passing the back of Downing Street, where the Prime Minister lives and the parade ground, where every June, The Queen's birthday parade (or Trooping the Colour) is held to mark her official birthday.
