The Sliver Jubilee Walkway Trust was established in 1978, and HRH The Duke of Gloucester became its patron. Under the guidance of Robert Shaw, Chairman from 1978 to 1994, the pavement markers were upgraded, The Queen's Walk on the South Bank was completed, and the Walkway was looped back from Tower Hill through the City to Leicester Square and Bloomsbury loop in Camden was added. Neville took over and steered the Walkway towards the Golden Jubilee. During this phase, many more panoramic panels were created and unveiled, one of the most memorable occasions being the unveiling of the panel outside South Africa House, by Nelson Mandela, President of South Africa, during his State Visit to Britain in July 1996. It was Neville's vision to mark the Golden Jubilee with a complete re-vamping of the Walkway, replacing pavement disks and updating, restoring and renewing many of the panels to record the ever-changing skyline in London. It is sad that he did not live to see the successful completion of this work. Sir James Swaffield succeeded Neville as Chairman in 2001 and presided over the Jubilee celebrations. He too had been involved with the Trust from the outset, and was formerly Director-General and Clerk of Lieutenancy for Greater London 1973 to 1984. He was also a Trustee of the Civic Trust. He retired after The Queen's visit in October 2002, but happily he continues to serve as a Trustee. He was succeeded by Hugo Vickers, who is an author and broadcaster, and who originally worked for the London Celebrations Committee for The Queen's Silver Jubilee in 1977. The Jubilee Walkway had been created as a lasting memorial to The Queen's Silver Jubilee in 1977. The Walkway Trust is committed to working in partnership with strategic & local authorities to ensure the route is well maintained. The Trust are particularly grateful to Transport for London, Royal Parks and all the relevant local authorities. TRUSTEES Mr Hugo Vickers (CHAIRMAN)
